The General Requirements for Professional Master's Degree Cultivation in Hunan Agricultural University

This requirement applies to the training of full-time professional degree postgraduates and part-time professional degree postgraduates .

一、Training Objectives

The overall training goal of professional degree postgraduates is to master the relevant theoretical knowledge of a particular occupational field, to have a strong ability to solve practical problems, to be able to undertake professional skill or management work, and to be high-level application-oriented professionals with good professionalism.According to the spirit of Teaching Steering Committee, all disciplines should combine their own characteristics and training conditions to formulate specific training programs for this professional category. The basic requirements for postgraduates in this field should be achieved from the following four aspects:

1. The character and basic qualities that should be possessed;

2. The basic knowledge and structure that should be mastered;

3. Practical training that should be accepted;

4. The basic abilities that should be possessed.

二、Period of School

The basic school system of full-time professional degree postgraduates is 2 or 3 years, and their duration cannot exceed 4 years .(including suspension and retention of student status; People who suspend schooling start up business.Their duration can be extended for 1 year.)The basic school system of part-time professional degree postgraduates is 3 years, and their duration cannot exceed 5 years .(including suspension and retention of student status; People who suspend schooling start up business.Their duration can be extended for 1 year.) Postgraduates who have exceeded the longest period of study fails to complete the requirements of training plan, and they should go through the formalities for the drop-out in accordance with relevant regulations, and not keep their names on the school roll.

Being approved by the school,the basic educational system for full-time professional degree postgraduates can be set up independently in accordance with the needs of different types.The basic educational system of six kinds of full-time professional degree masters is 3 years,such as Master of Landscape Architecture, Master of Physical Education , Master of Translation, Master of Accounting, Master of Business Administration, and Master of Public Administration .The basic educational system of five kinds of full-time professional degree masters is 2 years,such as Master of Engineering, Master of Agriculture, Master of Veterinary Medicine, Master of Finance, Master of Education

三、Training Methods

1The training methods of professional degree postgraduates include full time and part time.It combines course study, professional practice and dissertation.The course study of full-time professional degree postgraduates is generally one year, and the professional practice is no less than half a year.The course study of full-time professional degree postgraduates is generally one year to half a year ,and take sectional intensive classes . The professional practice is no less than half a year(on-the-job postgraduates with the same working background can combine with work in professional practice).

2The binary tutor system of intramural and extramural tutors is carried out for the professional degree postgraduates.The intramural tutor is the responsible tutor, who is mainly responsible for formulating the postgraduate training plan, organizing the opening report, the mid-term assessment and the thesis defense, guiding the project research and the dissertation, and guiding, demonstrating and supervising the moral character and academic morality of postgraduates .The extramural tutor is responsible for providing research topics with practical significance and application value , assisting in solving the conditions required for postgraduates to carry out professional practice and dissertation , participating in professional practice and the guidance of dissertation, quality supervision and dissertations defense, etc.

四、The basic training requirements 

In principle, the total credits of the professional degree postgraduates are not lower than the credits stipulated in the instructional training programs of Teaching Steering committee. Each professional category can make higher requirements based on actual conditions. The basic training requirements are as follows:

1. Make Personal Cultivation Plan

It includes course study plan , professional practice plan and thesis research plan.The course study plan is based on the training program and the professional foundation of the postgraduates. And it should be formulated within one month after admission under the guidance of the tutor in accordance with the requirements of discipline professional cultivation program. After the tutor’s approval, they can submit the plan through the graduate management information system. The thesis research plan is generally combined with a professional practice plan, and formulated at the beginning of the second semester.

Once the plan is determined, it must be strictly implemented. In the process of implementation, it may be modified due to changes in objective conditions. And the premise is that this should be consented by the head of the college and submitted to the training office for record.

2Course study and Requirements

The course study are divided into compulsory courses, elective courses and supplementary courses.In principle, the curriculum of each category (field) shall be set up in accordance with the requirements of the Ministry of Education and the teaching steering committee of each major. The curriculum shall be oriented to the professional needs and the practical application, so as to improve the overall quality and practical ability of the professional degree postgraduates.The teaching content should strengthen the link between theory and practice.The teaching methods should highlight case study and practical research.

(1) Public Compulsory Courses

Political Theory Course: Theory and Practice of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics (36 hours, 2 credits), Dialectics of Nature (18 hours, 1 credits).

Basic foreign languages: 60 hours, 3 credits. Those who pass CET-6 within three years before admission (whose scores are no less than 425), who have participated in other relevant national English proficiency tests abroad before admission and whose results have reached the qualified line of going abroad (valid for three years), who have been sent to English-speaking countries for more than one year, or who have obtained a bachelor's degree in English major, may apply for exemption from it.

Note: Master's degree students studying in China can substitute general knowledge of China and Chinese for political theory courses and first foreign language courses in public compulsory courses.

Other public compulsory courses are developed according to the requirements of Teaching Steering Committee.

2Professional Main Courses and Elective Courses

The professional main courses and elective courses are set up in accordance with the instructional training programs of Teaching Steering Committee.The new field of agricultural master's training program is merged by multiple fields, and its elective courses should be formulated in all directions.Every category (field) can add other elective courses according to the graduate training objectives and research needs. Other elective courses should generally be practical training courses that emphasize the training of practical ability .

(3) Public Elective Courses

It mainly includes professional ethics, intellectual property , ethics research, scientific paper writing and publishment ,information retrieval and utilization, cross-cultural exchanges,etc., which strengthen the comprehensive quality cultivation of postgraduates.

(4) Supplementary Courses

Those professional degree postgraduates admitted by the same academic level or interdisciplinary level should make up 3-5 main courses in undergraduate stage in this discipline before the mid-term assessment. No credit is counted.

3. Compulsory Links and Relevant Requirements

(1) Literature Reading and Review Report (1 credit)

Academic postgraduates should determine the direction of thesis research as soon as possible under the guidance of their tutors, and read the relevant research literature of the discipline at home and abroad extensively before the thesis proposal demonstration. The amount of literature should be determined by each discipline according to the degree awarding standard. At the same time, students should write more than two literature review reports, which should be approved and signed by the tutors and then submitted to the college for future reference.

(2) Academic Activities (2 credits)

Academic exchanges mainly include participate in high-level academic conferences of the industry, practical academic competitions, give academic reports on campus, and choose to attend academic forums. Professional degree postgraduates  should give academic reports at least twice during the study period, and attend academic exchanges no less than six times. 

3Professional Practice6 credits

Professional practice is a necessary link in the training of professional degree postgraduates. Full and high-quality professional practice is an important guarantee for the quality of professional degree education.During the study period , professional degree postgraduates need to go to the enterprise or industry (usually in the off-campus joint training practice base for graduate students) to complete the practice for no less than half a year. The practice method can be combined with  concentration and segmentation.In principle, it is required to complete the professional practice plan at the end of the second semester, and implement it at the beginning of the third semester.

Postgraduates who participate in practical research should write the final report of the practical research that can not  less than 5,000 words and conduct an oral examination on the practical research.The school organizes relevant disciplines to set up evaluation teams. The evaluation team assesses the practical research results of postgraduates in accordance with the practice workload, comprehensive performance and feedback from the practice units.Those who pass the examination by the school can obtain the credits corresponded.Each school should set up the practice content of the professional degree in accordance with the guiding training programs of Teaching Steering Committee, and formulate specific management methods based on their own professional characteristics.

4. Academic Dissertation

The selected topic of the professional dissertation should come from the application topic or the actual problem. It must have a clear professional background or industry application value, which highlights the ability and level of postgraduate in solving practical problems through comprehensive application of knowledge and skills . The research reports, applied basic research, planning and design, product development, case analysis and project management, etc. can be used as the main content for the thesis.The workload of the dissertation should  be no less than one year. The tutor should strengthen the guidance from  the thesis proposal, the thesis research to the thesis writing and the defense.

1Opening Report1 credit

It is the key link to ensure the quality of the dissertation. Under the guidance of the tutor and on the basis of literature review and investigation, professional degree postgraduates should determine the thesis topics and opening reports.A full-time professional degree postgraduates can make the opening report after the second semester. The part-time professional degree postgraduates should complete the opening reports by the end of the third semester .

(2) Mid-term Assessment (1 credit)

The mid-term assessment is based on the individual training program for professional degree postgraduates, checking the progress of their study, practical training and the dissertation, guiding postgraduates to grasp the research direction of the dissertation, and improving the quality of the dissertation.

(3) Pre-examination of Dissertations

The pre-examination of master's dissertation is a quality-checking process conducted by tutors and degree points before the formal submission of the dissertation after the completion of the research work and of the first draft of the dissertation has been done. After the completion of the first draft, the tutor shall conduct the preliminary examination. After the preliminary examination by the tutor, the discipline shall organize the relevant experts to conduct the advanced examination of the thesis. Only after the advanced examination is qualified, can the student formally participates in the defense.

(4) Thesis Defense and Degree Awarding

Within the prescribed period of study, professional degree postgraduates should complete the course study and training requirements and academic dissertation. If they meet the demands, they may apply for defense. Those who pass the defense will be allowed to graduate. Those who meet the criteria for granting degrees will be conferred master's degrees.

Those who apply for graduation in advance should abide by the relevant documents of the university.
